Do you love to travel? Are you looking forward to going out there – where ever your heart desires? If yes, then here’s something special for you. In this article, I’ve listed some great things about traveling.

9 Best Things About Traveling

If you haven’t traveled yet, don’t worry, just keep reading. This list will definitely inspire you to plan your next trip or even make this year an unforgettable journey…

1.    Traveling Makes Us Feel Free

When you’re on holiday, you feel free. You get to choose what you want to eat, wear, watch, listen to… everything. You get to decide when you want to sleep, go shopping or visit museums. And since you’re on vacation, you’ll never need permission from anyone else to enjoy yourself. So, whether you are a couch potato or a movie freak, feel free to explore any place you wish. The choice is yours.

2.    Travelling Gives Pleasure

It’s so exciting to discover new places and see new sights. Whether you prefer history or modern art, natural landscapes or urban cities, it’s always an adventure to find new places and meet new people.

Whether it’s the first time you’re visiting a country or you’ve been there several times before, each destination has its unique characters and stories. So, if you have been to Paris already, you might be surprised at what awaits you in New York.

And, if you haven’t seen them before, you’ll see these places as they were meant to be seen by travelers. A sense of wonderment comes over me every time I’m traveling. Even though I know the city very well, each time I turn around, I discover a different side of it.

3.    Travelers Give Back

Traveling opens up doors for other people. We often forget about the good deeds we can perform while we’re busy enjoying ourselves. The local community depends largely upon tourists for their livelihood. By spending money in the locality, we encourage others to spend money too. When we take part in volunteering programs, we help others build better lives.

We can volunteer for anything ranging from teaching English to elderly folks, helping kids learn, providing food for the homeless, etc. Volunteering abroad is easy because there are plenty of opportunities everywhere you go. Look for organizations working in partnership with host communities. By giving back to others, we are actually doing our bit for sustainable development. So, you can say “I gave back” after you return home.

4.    Feel Free on Vacation

There’s no such thing as being trapped during vacations. Whenever you go on a vacation, you can go wherever you like, whenever you like. No one is prying eyes on you or telling you what to do.

That’s probably the reason why we feel free on vacation. On holidays, we can act however we want without worrying about what others think. We can dress however we feel like dressing. We can eat whatever we want. We can stay up late or wake up early. We can stay in hotels or camp under the stars.

But, in reality, we rarely feel free. We usually live according to someone else’s expectations. But, once we step outside our comfort zones, we start feeling free.

On vacations, we get to experience true freedom.

5.    Tourism Helps the Economy

Tourism contributes significantly towards economic growth. According to World Bank data, tourism generates 3 percent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supports 7 percent of jobs worldwide. That means tourism plays a vital role in employment generation and poverty alleviation.

In developing countries, tourism provides job opportunities for locals. For example, in India, tourist services generate 1 million direct jobs and 2.5 million indirect ones. Similarly, tourism drives Cambodia’s economy, contributing 4% of GDP.

Since tourism creates demand for goods and services, it stimulates further investment and activity. For instance, tourism boosts demand for hotel rooms, air tickets, souvenirs, restaurants, guides, and transportation. Therefore, it increases the number of jobs associated with these sectors.

6.    Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism helps protect fragile ecosystems and promotes eco-friendly practices. Today, sustainability ranks high among priorities for both businesses and travelers alike.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), sustainable tourism is defined as “responsible tourism that conserves culture, protects the environment, improves social welfare, enhances visitor satisfaction, and encourages repeat visits.”

Nowadays, most companies and tour operators are committed to practicing sustainable tourism. They understand that sustainable tourism is important for environmental protection, cultural heritage preservation, and maintaining local cultures.

Also, sustainable tourism aims to create long-term benefits for both visitors and host communities. The goal is to develop a sustainable industry based on mutual respect and trust.

7.    Connecting to Nature

Nature connects us with our inner selves. Our ancestors knew this truth thousands of years ago. That’s why they lived close to rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests. Now, science has proven it true again.

Studies show that connecting to nature brings health benefits to humans. Spending short periods away from city lights reconnects us with our innate wisdom. Nature slows down our biological clocks, enhancing our mental and physical wellbeing.

Hence, nature therapy is becoming popular nowadays. People are increasingly seeking outdoor activities that connect them to nature. These therapies include hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, cycling, yoga, meditation, bird watching, photography, water sports, etc. These outdoor experiences provide a safe sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

8.    Meeting New People

People come in all shapes and sizes. Each person carries his/her own story. Our encounters with strangers enrich our journeys. While traveling, we are bound to meet interesting individuals. Some may become lifelong friends while others could end up being mentors. However, meeting new people is a chance for us to gain insights into other people’s perspectives.

Through conversations with strangers, we realize what kind of people we really are. Sometimes, we even change our perceptions of ourselves.

9.    Discovering Ourself

Our travels help us discover our true identity. While traveling, we are forced to face situations beyond our control. We must deal with challenges and overcome them. This process forces us to grow. As we navigate through unknown territories, we gradually figure out who we are. We acquire confidence in ourselves and gain the courage to tackle new tasks.

As we travel, we are exposed to various kinds of people, food, clothes, music, customs, language, etc., all of which influence us. As we adapt to these changes, we begin discovering our true selves.

Whether you are planning your next trip or going on a current one, remember that traveling is one of the best things to do in life. So, pack your bags and let the fun begin!
